Focus on People

Life is all about the people you meet and the incredible positive ripple effects you create with them. What we do together today will shape the life we live in the future.

On Wednesday this week, I went to Daniel Priestley’s event 'The Lifestyle Business Summit' and he said that 'people love people more than brands'. It got me thinking that everything we do in life and business is focused on people.

We are not necessarily interested in the businesses themselves. It’s the people behind the brands that we really want to connect with because without people in a business, what would be left? People make the difference in every company. They are how companies even exist in the first place. People and purpose therefore go hand in hand.

At the heart of every organisation was originally a person with a purpose. That person then inspired others to join their purpose-driven vision to collectively achieve the mission. People are the heartbeat of every business. This is why I believe that companies which are people-centred, values-based, fulfilment-focused and purpose-driven will thrive beyond all others.

At the summit, there were several speakers, all of whom shared important messages. However one speaker stood out above the others for me because he shared his personal purpose-driven story. His story spoke directly to my heart. In fact it tugged on my heart so strongly that I felt compelled to share with him afterwards how he had made me feel. I am delighted to announce that he will be coming on Focus on WHY in 2023 to share his story and l am certain his story will inspire you too with his combined purpose, passion and strategy.

My biggest takeaway from the summit is a simple one. Focus on people. I need more of the right people around me to help me fulfil my vision and mission. My business needs more than just me to make the impact I desire to make. It reminded me of Helen Keller’s words, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much."

It also reminded me of the importance of the roles that my friends, family, peers and connections all play in my life and I am grateful for each of them. What a lonely world that would be without all these incredible people surrounding me. Without people I would have no focus. Without people I would have no purpose.

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Howard Thurman, American Author, Philosopher, Theologian, Educator and Civil Rights Leader

So before I invite these people to join me in my purpose-driven vision and mission, first I need to ensure that I have clarity on what is important to me and what makes me come alive, what it is I stand for and what I stand against.

How about you? What is important to you? What makes you come alive? What do you stand for? What do you stand against? Knowing these answers, who are the people you need to surround yourself with and who does your business need to thrive?
