Focus on Success Values

Success isn’t only your achievements or recognition, it’s also about alignment, growth and impact. But what does success truly mean to you and how do you experience it in a way that feels meaningful?

When you define success through your values rather than external markers, you create a foundation that sustains you beyond fleeting accomplishments. My success values guide me personally and professionally, helping ensure my life is intentional and fulfilling. They are:

  • Transformation – Embracing change, growth and new perspectives

  • Contribution & Legacy – Giving my all and ensuring my work is meaningful

  • Growth – Trusting in the evolution of my purpose

  • Connectedness – Building deep relationships and celebrating success together

  • Opportunity – Creating space for possibility, gratitude and expansion

While success values shape your journey, success markers help you recognise when you are truly progressing. They come in two forms:

Internal markers (personal fulfilment) provide:

  • A deep sense of alignment with purpose

  • Continuous personal and professional growth

  • Emotional well-being and balance

External markers (tangible achievements) include:

  • Recognition – testimonials, positive feedback, awards

  • Financial stability and career milestones

  • Impact metrics – people you’ve helped, influence you’ve had, projects completed

Too often, you may find yourself chasing external markers without asking whether they align with your values. Meaningful success happens when internal and external markers are in harmony.

Just as purpose isn’t static, your perception of success changes as you grow. What once felt like the pinnacle may shift with your experiences, priorities and understanding. Clinging to outdated definitions—or someone else’s—can leave you feeling unfulfilled even after achieving what you once dreamed of.

Sometimes, success markers conflict with your values. For example:

  • You value Balance but your workload leaves you drained

  • You value Integrity but you feel pressured to cut corners

  • You measure success by income yet your most fulfilling work is unpaid

Aligning markers with values ensures achievements feel genuinely rewarding rather than superficially impressive.

One of the most profound lessons I’ve discovered during my years of purpose-focused podcasting and coaching is that failure is often essential to truly understanding success. Instead of seeing failure as a setback, these people have reframed it as a:

  • Lesson in growth – learning what works and what doesn’t

  • Test of resilience – pushing through challenges

  • Path to self-discovery – clarifying what truly matters

  • Redirection – sometimes leading to something even better

Many people struggle to recognise success because of:

  • Social Conditioning – being told success looks like money, status or a title

  • Fear of Change, Uncertainty or Failure – sticking to unfulfilling paths

  • Comparison – measuring against others particularly curated online profiles

  • Perfectionism & Imposter Syndrome – feeling ‘never good enough’

Coaching can also reveal another pattern: downplaying achievements where clients:

  • Minimise their success saying 'it was nothing'

  • Shift credit to others

  • Avoid recognition due to discomfort with praise

While humility is admirable, acknowledging and celebrating your success is crucial. Recognising your progress fuels confidence, motivation and inspiration. To truly recognise meaningful success, ask yourself:

  • Am I chasing success that looks good, or one that feels good?

  • Does my current path align with what I truly value?

Just as it is with purpose, success isn’t something you find, it’s something you create. Moment by moment, choice by choice, intention by intention. When you define it on your terms—rooted in your success values and measured by markers that truly matter—you build a life of meaning, fulfilment and lasting impact.
