Focus on Progress

Have you ever felt that you’re not getting anywhere because you’re not seeing the results you want quickly enough? It’s easy to overlook the small steps you’re taking when you’re focused on how far you still have to go. However as Dr Barnsley Brown reminds us in this week's podcast episode 536, meaningful progress rarely happens overnight. It’s the little things you do consistently that make the biggest difference over time.
Progress doesn’t have to look impressive. It might be sending that email you’ve been putting off, making one phone call or taking ten quiet minutes to listen to your intuition. These actions might not seem significant in isolation, but think about what happens when you keep going. Like spare coins accumulating in a jar, each small step adds up. Before you know it, you’ve made more progress than you realised.
Of course, taking action for the sake of being busy isn’t the answer. You need to know what you’re working towards and why it matters to you. Dr Barnsley describes purpose as a litmus test, helping you decide which opportunities deserve your attention and which are simply distractions. When you’re clear on what matters, you can make decisions with greater confidence rather than second-guessing every move.
That clarity is particularly valuable when life and work become noisy. New technologies, overflowing inboxes and other people’s opinions can easily pull you in different directions. Your why brings you back to what’s important, helping you focus your time and energy on the things that will make a meaningful difference.
Remember, you don’t have to do it all alone. Having people around you who encourage you, hold you accountable and celebrate your progress can make a real difference. Sometimes, you need someone else to remind you how far you’ve come when all you can see is how far you still have to go.
So, whatever you’re working towards, stop waiting for a breakthrough before you give yourself credit. Every idea you test, connection you make and purposeful action you take is an opportunity to learn, grow and move forwards. You might not see the full impact today, but that doesn’t mean progress isn’t happening.
You don’t need to have everything figured out. You just need to know why it matters and take the next step.
Progress isn’t about doing more. It’s about consistently doing what matters most. Get clear on your why, take the next small step and remember to celebrate how far you’ve come, not just how far you have to go.
Focus on Progress. Focus on Why.
REFLECTION WITH ACTION
What’s one small, purposeful action you could take today that your future self will thank you for? Choose one action that moves you closer to something that matters. Make it small enough to complete today, put it in your diary and do it. Then notice what happens when you repeat the process tomorrow.
