Focus on Intent
Updated: Aug 27

Today’s focus is on intent. Not intentions. Not intentional living. Simply... Intent. It's a small word but a powerful one. Intent is stronger and asks a deeper question: Why are you doing this? What is your intent?
This is the exact point where the shift from achievement to meaningful success begins. It moves you beyond simply asking what you're doing and invites you to consider why you're doing it. It’s a question I’ve been reflecting on recently because there’s a subtle but important difference between success and meaningful success.
For many years, I focused on what I could accomplish. The next milestone, the next goal, the next thing to prove — and I was good at it. I built a successful career, achieved things I was proud of and created a life that, from the outside, looked like it was going well.
However, eventually, a different question began to emerge: Why am I doing this? It wasn’t because I felt ambition was wrong, nor was it because achievement didn’t matter, it was more because there came a point when the question simply changed. It moved from: What can I achieve? to: What's worth achieving?
That shift is where meaningful success begins.
Many of my coaching clients are ambitious people who have reached this exact point in their life. They’ve achieved a great deal. They’re capable, driven and successful. Yet despite everything they’ve accomplished, they find themselves questioning whether the path they’re on still feels right. They start asking themselves: Is this what I really want? Does this still matter to me? Am I creating a future that reflects who I am now?
If you’re a regular listener of my podcast, you’ll recognise this pattern appearing time and time again across many of my conversations with guests. Their WHY and their purpose may be different, but the constant is the pause they take to question what they value, whether they’re on a path aligned with those values and whether they feel valued for their contribution in life.
The challenge is that you can become very good at pursuing goals without ever stopping to question whether those goals are truly yours. You can spend years working towards a definition of success shaped by expectations, comparison or the desire to prove yourself, without pausing to consider whether it reflects what matters most to you.
Intent changes that. When you're clear on your intent, decisions become easier. You understand what deserves your energy and attention. You become more confident about what to say yes to and what to let go of. You stop measuring success only by what you achieve and start considering what those achievements make possible.
More freedom. More connection. More contribution. More meaning.
This is the work I focus on with ambitious people who know they’re capable of more, but want that more to mean something. I help them to discover what truly matters, how to align their ambitions with their purpose and how to create a future that feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside.
Meaningful success is not about lowering your ambition. It’s about ensuring your ambition is connected to something that matters.
Reflection with Action
Reflection creates awareness, but it’s action that creates transformation. Clarity rarely comes from thinking alone. It comes when you combine reflection with action — when you take what you’ve discovered and use it to make intentional choices. So, rather than simply considering these ideas, take a moment to turn your reflection into action.
Ask yourself:
What am I currently pursuing and why?
Is my ambition aligned with what matters most to me?
What deserves more of my energy and attention?
What might I need to let go of to create space for what matters more?
Now choose one small, intentional step you can take. It might be starting a conversation you’ve been avoiding, making a decision you’ve been delaying, creating space to think differently or simply saying no to something that no longer aligns with the future you want to create. Reflection helps you see what needs to change. Action is what allows you to change it.
Take a moment to reflect:
What is your intent behind the success you're pursuing?
Are your current goals connected to what matters most to you?
Are you consciously creating a future you genuinely want, or are you simply continuing along the path you've always been on?
Sometimes the most powerful change does not begin with doing something different. It begins with understanding why. Your WHY. Your Focus on WHY!
YOUR NEXT STEP
This September, I’m bringing together a small group of ambitious people for my Meaningful Success Mastermind. A space to pause, reflect and intentionally design your next chapter.
Together, we’ll explore what meaningful success looks like for you, reconnect with your purpose and create a clear path forward that aligns with what matters most.
If you’ve achieved a great deal but feel ready for something deeper, this may be the conversation you’ve been looking for.
Email me here and let’s explore whether this is the right next step for you.
Focus on Intent. Focus on Why.
