Most of us move through life ticking boxes. We chase careers, pay mortgages, nurture families, perhaps squeeze in some volunteering or travel along the way. Yet, beneath all this doing, a persistent question lingers at the edge of our busy minds: am I really making a difference? Am I living with purpose or simply existing?
In this week’s episode of Focus on WHY–511 Justice, Respect and Sustainable Impact–Dr Nancy R. Irwin brings a grounded, human perspective to this ever-present question. Her life isn't defined by titles but by moments of transformation—from surviving near-fatal accidents to leading social enterprises in remote rainforests. Her work, whether establishing an NGO, writing a book or championing sustainable initiatives, is driven by a simple yet profound principle: “Is it fatal? If not, are you moving in the right direction? Is this where your purpose is?”
I don't tend to pick favourites when it comes to podcast episodes. It feels a bit like choosing a favourite child. However, Nancy would definitely feature right up there as one of my favourite guests. You’ll have to listen to understand why.
What stands out in Nancy’s story isn't just the drama—although there’s plenty of that—it's the honesty. Having navigated both literal and metaphorical challenges, she reminds us that purpose isn't reserved for grand gestures. Yes, making an impact matters. But it’s not only large-scale campaigns or global initiatives that count—it’s also the everyday choices, the small acts of kindness and genuine human connection that ripple out into the world.
For Nancy, purpose isn't a lightning bolt moment, nor is it about passion, although she admits she has “a passion for every mood!”. Instead it's more about aligning each day with values that endure: justice, respect and sustainable impact.
Crucially, Nancy shared that you don’t have to wait for a life-altering event to live with purpose. It’s already available to you–in how you show up, in how you treat others, in the choices you make each day.
Nancy’s advice is both humble and empowering: don’t panic. You don’t have to have it all figured out. Focus on human connection. Give a little of yourself to others and trust that, step by step, your purpose will be created.
Focus on Human Connection. Focus on Why.
REFLECTION WITH ACTION: What simple, purposeful choice could you make today — just one — that aligns with what matters most to you?Do it and notice the difference.
