Business books today play a vital role in sharing knowledge and expertise, inspiring change and shaping conversations. All forming the ethos and spirit which lie at the heart of the Business Book Awards.
On Wednesday this week, it was incredible to witness the breadth of talent in the room, to connect with fellow authors and to celebrate the winners across each category. What a privilege to be part of such an inspiring community of writers and changemakers.
As an author, my goal has always been to give the reader the necessary tools and confidence to take action. That’s why I feel so honoured that Focus on Why was named a finalist in the Work & Life category. Written to help individuals create a purposeful balance between work and home life, this recognition affirms the impact I hoped for: sparking conversations about purpose and empowering people to live and work with greater clarity, fulfilment and intention.
However, writing a book isn’t just about award recognition, it’s about legacy. Creating a legacy is not only what you leave behind but how you choose to live each day. Knowledge kept locked away serves no one especially when it could shape lives for the better.
On page 158 of my book, I remind the reader:
Your responsibility extends beyond your lifetime encompassing the passing on of knowledge to peers and future generations. Your experiences, including both successes and failures, serve as valuable lessons for others and become your legacy. Don't allow your knowledge to remain buried in your head. This concept echoes notes made in George's scrapbook from John Lyly's play Campaspe in January 1943, justifying his focus on study over fighting: 'It is better to have in your court a wise man, than in your ground a golden mine. Therefore would I leave war to study wisdom, were I Alexander.'
Wisdom shared is legacy created and this is why business books matter.
Focus on Business Books. Focus on Why.
REFLECTION WITH ACTION: What knowledge, experience or wisdom are you holding onto that the world needs you to share today?
