Focus on Uncertainty

Once again we find ourselves living and working in uncertain times. However, whether it’s market volatility, geopolitical events, organisational change or shifts in your personal life, uncertainty can make it feel as though you’re navigating without a compass. When this happens, it’s easy to slip into reacting rather than consciously choosing how you lead your life and your work.

This is exactly when purpose becomes most valuable. Purpose acts as a stabilising force, giving you clarity and focus when the path ahead isn’t clear.

Clarity doesn’t mean having all the answers. Many things will remain unknown. The clarity that matters comes from knowing what matters most and allowing that to guide your decisions. It means defining your non-negotiables: the values, behaviours and priorities that anchor you both personally and professionally when everything around you shifts.

When pressure increases, these anchors become your north star. They help you make consistent, confident choices even when outcomes are uncertain. Here are three simple exercises to help you navigate uncertainty:

Pressure Map

Identify where uncertainty feels greatest right now. What decisions feel stuck? Where are you reacting rather than responding with intention, either at work or in your personal life?

Non-Negotiables

Write down the principles that cannot flex without compromising trust, your wellbeing or long-term value. These might relate to how you lead, how you treat others or how you protect what matters most in your life.

Purpose Filter

Before making an important decision, ask yourself:

·       Does this align with who I say I am?

·       Does this serve long-term value, not just short-term relief?

·       Would I feel comfortable standing behind this decision publicly or explaining it to someone I respect?

Even small moments of structured clarity can shift your energy and focus. When you’re clear about what truly matters, you free up mental bandwidth, reduce reactive behaviour and create space for thoughtful action.

This week, take time to reconnect with your anchors. Write them down, revisit them often and use them to guide both your personal and professional decisions. Circumstances may change, but your purpose can remain constant.

Focus on Uncertainty. Focus on Why!

REFLECTION WITH ACTION: When uncertainty rises, are your decisions being driven by pressure or by purpose? Choose one meaningful decision this week, either in your work or personal life, and run it through your Purpose Filter before taking action. Notice the difference it makes to your confidence, clarity and sense of alignment.
