Happy New Year! New Year. New Home!
My New Year began with boxes, aching muscles and a whole new perspective on what home really means. While our house undergoes a full renovation, we have had to temporarily uproot our entire lives. Fortunately, our rental is just two doors down the road but don’t be fooled by the short distance. Moving the contents of a four-bedroom house and garage without a removal company is no small task.
Armed only with hand trolleys, a few crates and determination, the five of us clocked up over 200,000 steps across three very long days. Every trip back and forth tested our stamina, made even harder by icy paths, freezing temperatures and battling head colds. There were moments when the effort felt almost Herculean, but there was no time to doubt ourselves. We were committed to making it happen and we did. The builders arrived right on time at 8.30am on Monday morning and we were ready for them, just!
Nothing quite compares to the comfort of a warm, safe home, wherever it happens to be. However, as exhausting as the experience was, it reminded me that home isn’t just the building you inhabit. It’s the people you share the journey with, the teamwork when things feel tough and the shared relief when you finally sit down together at the end of the day.
What does home mean to you? Beyond bricks and mortar, what creates that sense of comfort, safety and belonging in your life? Define what constitutes your version of ‘home’ then choose one simple action this week that helps you feel more settled and supported, whether that’s creating a cosy space, reaching out to someone you love or slowing down long enough to enjoy where you are.
