Focus on Communication

True communication goes far beyond exchanging words. It's rooted in empathy, patience and a willingness to meet people where they are. In the latest Focus on WHY conversation, Louise Baxter MBE spoke about the importance of making communication accessible and human, particularly when supporting vulnerable individuals. Her message was clear: when people struggle to understand, it is not their failure, it is our responsibility to adapt. Sometimes that means slowing down, simplifying, giving more time or offering support in a way that truly meets their needs.
Yet in a world that celebrates speed and efficiency, these small acts are often overlooked. We rush, we assume and we prioritise getting things done over truly connecting. In doing so, we risk creating barriers rather than removing them.
What stands out is how simple it can be to shift this. Communication does not need to be complex to be powerful. It starts with presence. With curiosity. With a genuine willingness to understand.
A small but meaningful change is to pause before reacting or solving and instead ask a better question: 'What do you need right now?'
This creates space. It empowers others. It transforms communication from transactional to human.
When we focus on how we communicate, we influence not only the outcome of a conversation but the experience of the person in front of us.
REFLECTION WITH ACTION
How willing are you to slow down and ask, with sincerity, 'What do you need?' What might change if, for the next 24 hours, you chose to communicate with intention, patience and empathy?
Focus on Communication. Focus on WHY!
