Life feels like it’s speeding up, doesn’t it? Just when you think things might finally settle, another change comes hurtling around the corner. It’s no wonder you sometimes feel off balance, scanning the horizon for stability, only to find that everyone else is still finding their footing too.
In episode 482 of Focus on WHY, Indelible Impacts, Nick Gold shared a powerful idea to navigate this constant change: comfort. Not the ‘switch off and put your feet up’ kind, but a deeper comfort; the kind that comes from being at ease with yourself regardless of what’s happening around you as this is where real growth occurs.
Nick explained that growth isn’t about chasing bigger business, more possessions or shinier status. That’s just the noise of 24/7 marketing. Real growth is about feeling comfortable in your own skin. It’s the ability to sit with yourself or others, even in silence, and know that you’re enough.
In business, this looks like empowering people to try new things and make bold decisions even when the path isn’t clear. It’s building a culture where mistakes aren’t feared but welcomed as part of the journey. As Nick put it: ‘It’s better to make a decision than not make a decision and then worry about the consequences afterwards.’ Comfort, in this sense, isn’t complacency; it’s an acceptance that not everything can, nor should, be controlled.
In your own life, comfort is what frees you from the pressure to constantly strive. It’s what helps you choose meaning over metrics and find fulfilment in connection, curiosity and those small everyday joys.
Comfort isn’t a fixed or final destination either. Your experiences, upbringing and environment will always pull you back to old patterns. That’s why it matters to pause, check in with yourself and realign with what feels right for you. When you do, you start to build a comfort that grounds you, and those around you, irrespective of how stormy your life becomes.
When was the last time you felt truly at ease in yourself, not just in your surroundings? This week, pay attention to those moments of natural comfort. What could you release, or lean into, to create more of them?
Sometimes the greatest act of courage isn’t chasing the next big thing but settling, even briefly, into who you truly are.
Focus on Comfort. Focus on Why.
REFLECTION WITH ACTION: How might your life or work shift if you focused on becoming comfortable in your own skin rather than endlessly striving for more?
