Focus on Birthdays

ree

This Sunday will be a day filled with celebration. Not only is is St. Andrew’s Day, it’s also my birthday!

How has it crept up on me so fast again? It only feels like yesterday I was in Rhode Island with my husband and cousins celebrating turning 50, wondering what the next decade might hold. Then suddenly another year has zoomed by. Instead of feeling startled, I’ve learned to treat my birthdays as gentle invitations to pause. Nothing overly serious, just a quiet moment to reflect on what’s brought me meaning, what’s felt fulfilling and where might the universe be quietly nudging me next.

When you allow yourself this space, your growth becomes clear. Sometimes the changes are subtle yet they powerfully shape your sense of purpose often without you even noticing at the time. Yesterday, planting a pomegranate tree, a gift from my mum, felt like one of those moments. There was something beautifully symbolic about it, a little reminder of roots, growth and the sweetness still to come. Special thanks to Arthur for helping me dig the hole!

Then there’s the joy of celebrating. My idea of the perfect birthday hasn’t changed since last year: a long countryside walk with family and friends, conversations meandering as easily as the paths beneath our feet. Followed by a comforting Sunday roast at my new local pub, then Carols on the Green as the light fades. Back home in the warm by the log fire, diving into homemade pomegranate, pistachio and chocolate tarts with the Christmas tree fairy lights making it feel even more magical.

For me, it’s these small, wholehearted moments that carry real meaning: connection, gratitude, a sense of belonging. Birthdays remind me to notice and appreciate them. They help me recognise where I am, realign with my intentions and step into the year ahead with a clearer, more intentional heart.

2025 has been a big year of change for my family and me: a new home, a new garden, a new village. 2026 promises even more transformation as we move into a rental in January to enable our builder to complete home refurbishments. Exciting times ahead. I do so love a transformation.

Focus on Birthdays. Focus on Why!

REFLECTION WITH ACTION: As your own birthday approaches, what small, meaningful moments might you pause to notice?
