“One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life:
That word is love.” Sophocles
Today is a simple request and yet it is a powerful one. Focus on Love.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could all just spread a little love around?
This request was inspired by my recent birthday where I received many messages and felt ever so loved. Small amount of effort from others to simply wish me a Happy Birthday and yet a huge impact for me to receive their love.
This was further endorsed by a wonderful podcast conversation I recorded recently with Diversity and Inclusion expert, Jackie Handy, speaking of the importance and impact of love and belonging in the world. We look for connection, seek a sense of belonging and the feeling that we are loved.
What does love mean to you? The Greeks used four different words to describe love. Eros described an erotic, passionate love. Philia described the type of love you have for friends and equals. Storge described the love parents have for their children and Agape is the love of mankind. Love is different for all of us.
You have an abundance of love within you ready to share freely with others. Who would benefit from hearing your words or acts of love?
Actually, it’s not just words or acts of love that you can offer. You express and receive love differently to others and you will tend to fall into one of the five universal categories of love as identified by author of The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman Ph.D. You have at least one love language that you prefer above the others and this could be Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time or Physical Touch.
I asked everyone in my immediate family to take the quiz below and here are our results. My daughter’s primary love language is Quality Time with Words of Affirmation as her next priority. My son also favours Quality Time with Acts of Service and Words of Affirmation joint second. My husband’s primary love language is also Quality Time and with Physical Touch and Words of Affirmation scoring highly too. I prioritise Acts of Service and Words of Affirmation.
Can you see how each of us have different ways of expressing and receiving love? Knowing that changes how we all communicate our love to one another to ensure that it is received in accordance with our preferences.
